The Move

Two weeks ago I moved across the country to live in Brisbane.

To me it wasn’t a spur of the moment move, although to some it may have been. But as it had been a constant talking point for my family and I for over a year or so it wasn’t quite so dramatic. But when everything seemed to align perfectly it wasn’t something I could say no to.

The reason for my move of course was to pursue my Olympic dream. As 2016 is the year it all happens for the Olympics (well, until the next 4 years comes along) you can imagine how crazy it can be with selection events and training commitments. And as all the domestic selection events are being held in Brisbane it was easier to move for the time being, so instead of travelling to and from Perth all the time now I can just stay put and use my time efficiently. Not only does this benefit me, but the National Coach is based in Brisbane so this means more coaching opportunities for me and more technique help, whereas in Perth I wouldn’t have had that.

Timing was key. It so happened that one night while I was in Brisbane before the first selection trial had taken place, I rang my parents to talk with them about the possibilities of me moving here. We were talking through some aspects of costs and possibilities, it almost looked like it wasn’t going to happen. Then a couple nights later I got a call from my Dad saying that they were talking with some friends over dinner and they might have some people in Brisbane that would be willing to help me out.

From here it snowballed, everything seemed to come into place fast. Things I was worried about like having to buy a car, buying furniture,  having to rent with heaps of people to lower costs etc, all disappeared. They had upstairs fully furnished with bedroom,  bathroom, kitchen dining, lounge as well as a spare room. They had a car they were willing to loan me and would even help me out in finding a job. They were extremely nice people and reminded me a lot of my parents which helped also.

I had to immediately start putting things into action. Things like telling my work that I was leaving for 6 months, let my friends know what was happening and organise everything I was going to bring with me. I had two weeks before the Coach was back from her trip to Taiwan , which was plenty of time to get sorted. Well not as much time as I would have hoped, considering I may have procrastinated the first week on getting most of the important things done. But all in all it got done, with maybe more stress then needed.

Stay tuned for my next blog.
